Amateurs and Professionals

A blog post* crossed my desk in one of my favorite newsletters (Farnam Street|Brain Food), and its pertinence to the mindset we strive for struck home.

Some excerpts that seem particularly appropriate:

  • Amateurs have a goal. Professionals have a system.
  • Amateurs want to win the moment. Professionals want to win the decade.
  • Amateurs focus on the outcome. Professionals focus on the process.
  • Amateurs value doing it once. Professionals value doing it consistently.
  • Amateurs are intermittent. Professionals are consistent.
  • Amateurs focus on speed. Professionals focus on velocity.

Along the same line – years ago  (I don’t remember when or where)  I heard this very similar saying, and it has stuck with me over the years:

  • Amateurs practice until they get it right. Professionals practice until they can’t get it wrong.

Does any of this resonate with you? Do you sometimes find yourself on the amateur side of the scale?

I think most of us do, even as we’re aware of its self-defeating nature.

Just a gentle reminder – we’re on the way to becoming true professionals.
